We have many shared influences, none more contemporary than Mitchell & Webb. For me in particular, I became a real Mitchell-head throughout high school and my early twenties, with an admiration for not only his seat-of-the-pants wisdom but the biting and florid language with which he makes his arguments.
I think this sketch typifies his style of satire and convinces you of the triteness of the Diana assassination theory with hilariously deadpan tabloid-esque claims: “She’s unprovably pregnant, remember? Women recently impregnated by the only man they’ve ever loved are notoriously slapdash about their personal safety.”
I love Webb too and his delivery is devilishly good here (“Yes, always” and “Whereas if she’s dead, she’ll be forgotten in a week”).
I rate a non-sequitur segue as much as the next Python fan, but an ending of simultaneous relevance and closure is done so rarely and none better than this sketch. I raise my poison-tipped umbrella to the writers!
Other excellent satire by Mitchell & Webb: Homeopathic A&E.
